A Guide to Feeding Community Dogs: What’s Safe & What’s Not

Our precious streeties are an inseparable part of our streets, and for many of us, feeding them is a small act of kindness that makes a big difference. But while our hearts may be in the right place, it’s equally important to ensure we are feeding them the right food—something that is both nutritious and safe.

  1. Rice with Lentils or Vegetables
A simple, home-cooked meal of rice with lentils (dal) or cooked vegetables without salt (like carrots, pumpkin, or beans) is a great option. It provides energy and essential nutrients while being easy on their stomachs.

  2. Boiled Chicken and Rice
If you can, adding some boiled chicken to rice makes for a protein-packed meal that helps keep them strong and healthy.

  3. Roti (Without Ghee or Butter)
Plain rotis are a good filler meal but should not be their primary diet. Avoid adding ghee, butter, or salt, as these can be difficult for dogs to digest.

  4. Curd or Buttermilk
These are great sources of probiotics and help maintain gut health, especially during hot weather.

  5. Dog Biscuits or Good Quality Dog Food
If you’re short on time or resources, simple dog biscuits (unsweetened) or packaged dog food can be a convenient and nutritious option.

  6. Eggs (Boiled or Scrambled Without Oil)
Eggs are a great source of protein and healthy fats. They are easy to prepare and well-tolerated by most dogs.

  1. Spicy or Oily Food
Indian food tends to be rich in spices, onions, and garlic, which can be harmful to dogs. Avoid feeding them leftovers from spicy curries or fried food.

  2. Chocolate and Sweets
Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Sugary foods can also lead to diabetes and digestive issues.

  3. Onions and Garlic
Even in small amounts, these can damage a dog’s red blood cells and lead to anemia.

  4. Raw Meat or Fish
While dogs in the wild eat raw food, streeties are often not used to it. Raw meat can carry bacteria and parasites that may make them sick.

  5. Milk
Many adult dogs are lactose intolerant, and milk can cause diarrhea and stomach upset.

  6. Bones (Especially Cooked Bones)
While raw bones can be safe in some cases, cooked bones (especially chicken bones) can splinter and cause choking or internal injuries.

  1. Feed at a Fixed Spot: Streeties feel safer when they know when and where they will be fed. Try to maintain a routine.

  2. Provide Clean Water: Especially during summers, leaving out a bowl of clean water can be lifesaving for streeties.

  3. Keep the Area Clean: Dispose of food scraps properly to prevent attracting pests or complaints from neighbors.

  4. Be Patient and Gentle: Some community dogs may be wary of people at first. Give them space and let them get comfortable with your presence.

Feeding community dogs is a compassionate act, but doing it responsibly ensures their well-being and maintains harmony in the community. A little effort goes a long way in making their lives safer and healthier. Let’s be their voice and their helping hand!

Till then lots of woofs and wags to you!
