Summer Care Guide for Dogs

Indian summers can be harsh, and just like us, our furry companions feel the heat too. High temperatures, humidity, and hot surfaces can lead to dehydration, heatstroke, and discomfort. Here’s how you can keep your dog safe and comfortable during the scorching summer months.

  • Ensure your dog has access to fresh, clean water at all times.

  • Add ice cubes to their water bowl for a cooling effect.

  • Offer hydrating foods like curd, watermelon (without seeds), and cucumber in moderation.

  • Avoid walking your dog during peak heat hours (11 AM - 4 PM) to prevent burnt paw pads.

  • Walk them on grass or shaded areas instead of hot pavement.

  • Consider dog booties for extra protection.

  • Keep your dog indoors during extreme heat and ensure they have a cool, shaded spot to rest.

  • Use cooling mats or wet towels to help regulate their body temperature.

  • Place a fan or air cooler near their resting area for added comfort.

  • Lighter meals are easier to digest, so reduce heavy foods in summer.

  • Avoid oily, spicy, and salty human food, as it can dehydrate them.

  • Increase fresh fruits and vegetables that are dog-safe.

  • Brush regularly to remove excess fur and prevent overheating.

  • Avoid shaving double-coated dogs, as their fur helps regulate temperature.

  • Bathe occasionally with a mild dog shampoo, but not too frequently, as it can strip natural oils.

Signs of heatstroke include excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, and collapse. If your dog shows these signs:

  • Move them to a cool place immediately.

  • Offer cool (not ice-cold) water.

  • Wet their paws, belly, and ears with a damp cloth.

  • Seek veterinary help urgently.

  • Opt for shorter, early morning or late evening walks.

  • Keep play sessions indoors or in shaded areas.

  • Summer increases the risk of fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes.

  • Use vet-recommended anti-tick treatments and keep their bedding clean.

  • Regularly check for ticks, especially around ears, paws, and underbelly.

Even with the windows slightly open, temperatures inside a car can become dangerously high within minutes. Always take your dog with you or leave them at home in a cool environment.

  • Offer homemade frozen treats like banana yogurt popsicles.

  • Let them play in a kiddie pool or with a gentle water spray.

  • Create a DIY cooling vest by soaking a light towel in cool water and draping it over them.

Indian summers can be challenging for our four-legged friends, but with a little extra care, we can ensure they stay safe, happy, and comfortable. Keep an eye on their hydration, avoid peak heat hours, and provide plenty of cooling options. A little effort goes a long way in keeping your dog healthy during the summer months!

Till then lots of woofs and wags to you!
